Default subwoofer size has nothing to do with group delay (tightness)

subwoofer alignment is everything. A 15" sub can be made to sound tight while an 8" can sound sloppy.

Default I would suggest getting another and an amp because

basically its the easiesy way to get more bass. getting one 15, yeah you will get lower and alittle louder bass than the 12, but 2 12s are going to be louder than one 15, assuming the power is the same. Just get an amp that you can really push the jls. I really dont have any experience with jls, (personal prefrence ) so i cant give you any details with wattage etc.

peace

Default Re: space problem

The reason i didn't do two tens is it would taken up the entire trunk with the 12 there is still some room. I guess I could mount them to the back wall. But I heard that an enclosure is better in terms of sound quality. I guess my question is if I stick with the 12 but drive it with its own amp will it be louder or is it just a matter of having more surface area of subwoofer ie. bigger subwoofer

Default It's more than just alignment too...

the transient response also depends on the mass of the cone and strength of the magnet (BL). It's pure physics: a higher mass cone is more difficult to accelerate than a lower mass cone. Yes, you can make a 15" woofer have good damping characteristics (transient reponse), but in general it's going to be "slower" than a smaller, lower mass (cone) woofer.

Default Ughhhh... no.

At bass frequencies mass has very little say in transient response individually. Since there are so many variables involved in caculating group delay and freuqency response, it behooves one to focus more on the alignment (the dependent variable) than the subwoofer properties (the independent variable).
