Default Need some help. Debating upgrading my stereo

I don't know much about car stereo stuff anymore. Haven't paid attention in a while. Actually, I'm looking more at just doing the speakers. System is a 2001 A4 non-bose. Looking for an accurate/realistic sound. I do not want any sub boxes. What sizes are the stock speakers and what are you guys using when you replace them?

Thanks.

stock speakers in all A4's are 4" woofers with a 1" tweeter. MBQuart makes a 4"-to-5.5" adapter that you can use to put 5.5" speakers in the stock locations without any door modifications. Many folks on this forum have used them with outstanding results (myself included)... I used MBQuart speakers to replace the stock ones but the adapters will work with virtually all brands. I cant recall anyone actually having a problem with a driver not fitting, but maybe someone else can chime in on this issue.

I just got my upgrade back and it sounds awesome, but I spent a lot. I got a 5 channel amp and a subwoofer and replaced both sets of speakers. Most people will tell you that, while the base stereo speakers are not great, the head unit amp is even worse, so for the money you get more sound out of an amp for the fronts than you do by replacing the speakers. The fronts are 4" but will take 51/4's, and the backs are 51/4 but will take 61/2's. The back speakers are self amplified which means if you replace the backs you'll need an amp. If you think you will have more stereo money in the future, you could just add an amp and nu back speakers and add the fronts when you have the money. Some people have added an amp and been happy with the stock speakers.

Default My solution.

I agree. I was debating on my upgrade but it can be done without spending a fortune. I have boston pros 4" in front 200 EBay new. MTX pro amp 50x4 150new ebay. Phoenix gold eq215ix 130 used ebay. and infinity 10"kappa perfert 150 new ebay. all cables high quality 30 bucks ebay. Custom fiberglass sub enclosure built by yours truly-- priceless and major PITA but now worth it- in passenger side trunk storage hole. Ill post some pictures in near future. BLOWs away the factory system. And lastly JVC MP3 player 4V out with real aluminum face plate 300 internet. I can see why custom install cost so much if you want it done right.
Total a little over 800 bucks. Not a bass sytem but great sound quality.
