Default New head unit advice

Okay, the day of reckoning has finally come. The head unit in my 1994 100CSq has crapped out completely. Since it's got the Audi/Bose sound package, there ain't a head unit out there that won't eventually start cooking speakers, so I've been told. My question is: what do I need to make this work? Any special wiring harnesses, or anything? And has anybody out there had any luck replacing a Bose deck with an aftermarket that has worked properly? Since I have no tunes at all right now, I'm planning on getting a new head unit within the week, so I figured I'd get some professional (or damn close to it) advice before I do. Thanks.

I don't have the budget for speakers or amps right now; just the deck.
