This past weekend, I spent 2+ hours (at a time) in the car with the outside temperature over 95 degrees. My amp (mounted on the back on the rear seat) overheated twice (it was on pretty loud most of the time in the trip).
Can this damage the amp? After that happened, I played the system at much lower levels and even shut the music off for a bit to let it cool down.
Is there anywhere I can get more info on amps? Stuff like their cicuitry, etc?
It's a RF 550X.
Thanks.

Although that weekend I did have a bunch of ish in the trunk, but made sure nothing was touching.

all adds up to a pretty likely scenerio for overheating an amp. No likely damage since the amp has thermal protection circuitry (this is what is causing the amp to shut down, to protect itself from permanent damage).
Having a dark colored car really makes a difference. The trunk of your car probably reached 175+ degrees. Next time fold down at least one of your seats to aloow cool air flow to get back there. Your staging will be thrown off but it's better than singing to yourself!

shouldn't make that big a deal. I've had dark colored cars with 3 amps in the trunk, 2 between the seat and sub enclosure and have never had one go into thermal protection. And those particular amps are still working after 7 years of service. Go ole PPI A300 Art Series.
A4Uke, I would see if you can try another amp and see if you get the same behavior. Sounds like it's an amp or you have some kind of funny load issue. Are your connectios (power, ground) good?

Heat in the trunk was probably a contributing factor but not necessarily the cause. I found this writup where someone had the exact same problem with a RF amp. Check it out....

http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-79DE-24068045-39F64783-prod3</a

is front to back. staging is left to right. i have a black car, live in florida and had the same amp running my entire car for the last year with NO shut downs. the settings are run too high and overloading the amp more than anything else. problem is the amp, it's a fosgate and they love to run really hot. really shouldn't send more than a 4-ohm load to those amps, they just plain don't like it, and it seems to be telling you about how much it is enjoying it.
