Default Poll: What bit rate do you rip your music onto your iPod at?

I've used the standard setting of 128kb, and wasn't satisfied with it.

256k. 192k is probably max with detectable difference. 256k is only just slightly over the top.

Default EAC+LAME 192kbs VBR (-V 2 -new-vbr switch) and I'd never complain.

I really couldn't tell the difference when I've ABX'd them with my lossless FLAC files.

Take my word, 192kbs VBR with Exact Audio Copy + LAME.

Of course I use lossless for my home system. =)

What's the advantage to using variable bit rate (VBR)?

Default VBR allows for detail in complex parts of the music and higher compression during dead spots.

Basically you get higher quality where you need it. LAME happens to be considered the best in higher bit rate vbr.

Default I use the same Never tried FLAC.

192 CBR sounds really bad. It's not that noticeable if all you listen too is hip hop. But if you listen to any type of rock or alternative, the guitarsnsound really bad at 192 CBR. There is noticeable improvement going to 256 and again to 320 CBR. I would say that 192 VBR sounds very similar to 320 CBR but the file sizes for VBR are about 40% smaller.

Default almost the same. Lame parameters..

a while ago there was a pretty good site called r3mix.net. it doesn't seem to exist anymore; but thru extensive testing, this was the suggested parameters with lame 3.96.1:

-b 96 -m j -h -V 1 -B 320 --lowpass 19.5 --nspsytune --vbr-mtrh --athtype 3 --ns-sfb21 2 -Z --scale 0.98 -X 0

i believe lame has a preset option called "--r3mix" that does something similar.

i use razorlame as the front end.

Default Isn't that for the older versions of LAME? There was a significant improvement in LAME in version

3.96 I think. My parameter setting is for the 3.97 version of LAME I'm currently using. I could be wrong...
