So I have re-installed a system from my 02 A4 but the power cap seems to be not working. Its a 1 farad cap with a digital voltage display that is currently blank. I assumed that a cap wa a simple power and ground hook-up but someone has suggested that there is more to "chargin" the cap than that. Have I done harm to it by simply hooking it up and powering it up ? How can I remedy this ?

a power cap is wired the same as a second battery would be wired from the car battery 12v+ wire to the + side of the cap then from the same side wire to the amp. from the - side of the cap wire to ground on most caps the meter will only read when there is changes in voltage
