Default Problems with sub box placement....

Well damn, I have all my stereo stuff ready to go, about to build the box, and I keep changing my mind about whether to face the subs forward or back. Here's the deal, I can place them forward, but I almost always drive around with someone in the back seat, and I don't want to have to keep folding up the rear seats to hide my subs...like when I go into a mall and don't want two subs in plain view of thieves. Now, if I face them towards the trunk....I need to let the air out somewhere. I'm not making a ported box and having tubes all over the place to let air out. I can't put the speakers in the rear doors because I don't want to cut up my car so that the next owner has a completely stock car if he/she takes out the stereo... do you get where I'm coming from here...? Also on my 98.5 model, the ski sack doesn't come out without actually cutting off half of one of the rear seats..there is like a board that goes across the whole seat.

So I'm left with either putting up with a rattling trunk, cutting into my doors, folding the rear seat (i have to move both front seats forward to allow room for the rear to fold down), cutting up the rear seat, or hoping the sound will travel through folded up seats. Whats the best thing to do in this situation?

For added info: two 12" RF HX2's in a sealed box, 6.5 Fanatic Q's going in rear deck. 2 amps going somewhere in trunk. Thank you!
~Mike

Default one other option (m)

This is something I think about every day, and I probably will untill I get my system put in. Your situation is more grimm than mine, (ski sack can come out), but I have been asking many people about this. I even asked my cable installer yesterday (he's an ex competition audio installer) and he, like most others, said f@#k the rear. It just doesn't matter that much. So basically what's more important is that bass makes it up front without distortion. With this in mind, I am strongly considering selling my 6.5's for the rear deck, and bridging my 4 channel amp to the front 5.25 separates. This would allow large openings in the rear deck, and hence better bass from the trunk.

Default That is exactly what I did...

Damn, you read my mind, or maybe saw my system...

Unless you've got multiple and/or large subs with all kinds of power back there, you won't get much bass into the car with the seats up and rear speakers installed.
99.5 A4 1.8TQMS APR Stage 1

Default I'd love to see somone (remove the rear speakers and) angle the subs such that...

they are pointed partially forward and partially upwards, in a design that would allow the bass to travel forwards when the seats are down and upwards out of the deck holes when the seats are up. Also suggested would be to seperate this part (the fronts) of the subs from the remainder of the trunk. So basically a wall that is placed just behind the rear speaker holes.

Just some brainstorming.

Mike, run that ski sack thing by me again - why can't it be removed? The front and back of the plastic piece should pry apart per CP. Maybe I'll take a look at it this weekend.

Default Ski sack....

My ski sack is on the passenger side rear seat. It has a solid backing to it, like a piece of wood. This is on a 98.5 model...so you might be able to on a newer model. To actually remove it, it looks like I would have to saw off about half of the seat. There are no clips or anywhere to remove it, it's all sewn together... So this wouldn't really be an option to let air out...as I would have a big hole in the seat.
~Mike

Default what about...(more)

subs that were linked to the rear seat/seats. Since I only have one twelve I was thinking just for the 40% side. What I mean is that the enclosure is custom mounted to the seat back in such a way that when the seat is folded down, the sub angles forward (with trim to fill the hole to the trunk completely), and with it up it is at more of an north south angle, utilizing the ports in the deck. I guess this would take serious work, but I can definently see it in my mind. I guess it would require an integrated track, devised so the enclosure/sub pivots forward/up as the seat back is closed. If anyone is interested in this let me know. I might run the idea buy my local installer.
