Default Questions about adding a 10" sub to my 01 A6 w. Bose

Hey, I want to upgrade my oem Bose setup & add a sub. Can the amp that powers the stock sub power a 10" in a sealed box instead of the 4" subs? If not, I can add an amp & just use a hi/lo converter. In that case, which wires do I use for signal? Anyone know what colors so i can save some hunting time?

Thanks in advance

Default Just did this on my '07 RS4. Phenomenal results!!!!

After all the negaitive press about this mod and how it won't give you "real high fidelity", I must say I have been very satisfied. The Bose speakers do a perfectly good job with mids and highs. I don't really like the overly bright sounds of many aftermarket tweeters anyway. Adding a sub will give you a tremendously better overall soundfield. I went with a JL audio 8W7 powered with a JL audio 250 watt amp. It has a built in hi-lo converter as well as signal sensing turn-on so you don't have to run an accessory power source to turn the amp on. The amp has plenty of adjustibility to mate the sub to the factory system. I tapped into the signal going to the rear speakers to feed the sub amp. regardless of what skeptics my say, I find the sound to be just superb. And for comparison.....I have a full $5000 custom system in my Nissan 350Z, and the Bose system with sub, sounds 90% as good.

Default Awesome. Glad to hear. Anyone know what wires to use for signal & turn on in my A6?

Save me some time testing all the wires. Should I use a signal wire before the amp or just use the ones that go direct to the factory sub & leave the amp in to provide signal to the hi/lo?

Default A few more points.....

At least on my '07 RS4, I can not use the stock accessory wire that turns on the Bose amp to turn on the sub amp as well. Apparently the Bose amp is always powered up and this is why you can listen to the Bose audio system without turning the car on. If you use this (white) wire to turn on your sub amp, it, too, will be on all the time, and will drain your battery. I did all the routing of wires, connections, sub box construction and cosmetic work myself, but took it to a professional installer for the actual interface wiring to the Bose amp.

Also, make certain you use an amp that can easily adjust crossover points, input sensitivity, roll-offs, etc. so that you can mate you sub easily to the stock system.

Don't go more than 10" in size. The Bose doesn't have enough upper bass to fill in above a woofer that size. I went with a high-end 8" sub, sacrificing the really deep bass for more upper bass punch. That said, the JL audio 8W7, to my ears, still has plenty of low bass output.

You need to somehow get a hold of the wiring diagram for your car's audio system to see which color wires are going where. I actually got mine off this forum, but I have a B7 platform car which is much newer. As a last resort, you can go to your Audi dealer. They should have the info.

Anyway, it's a great mod. Well worth the money, and definitely ranks high in the bang-for-buck department.

Here's the link to my thread a few weeks back with some pics....<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/rs4b7/msgs/53710.phtml">sub install</a></li></ul>
