Default Quick advice for '98 A4

I just got a used '98 A4. Here's what I know:
1) It's got a Delta head unit that says BOSE when I turn it on. The volume control is sketchy (jumps from quiet to loud).
2) I'd like more bass.
3) It's got a 6-Disk CD Changer that skips much more than any car CD player I've ever heard.
4) I like the way the Audi head units integrate into the dash (i.e., I'm not crazy about installing a non-Audi head unit).
5) I'm willing to spend $500 or so to make it right.

Any suggestions?
Ideally, I'd like to get a new CD changer and a nicer Audi head unit without too much hassle.

Thanks

I had that too the reason the volume jumps suddenly is that the Amp peaks at random times. If you want more bass put in a speaker level to RCA Adapter about $30. Then add a 10" or 12" sub. The Boston acoustics generator series subs sound really good and run off of about 200 watts. So figure about 200 for the sub (they come with a box) and depends on what amp you want expect 150-300 for the amp.

I have similar problems with my Delta head unit, and am considering the following:

Blaupunkt head unit ($300-450)
Blaupunkt A08 changer ($220)
Line level adapter between head and Bose Amp ($50-70)

I'm not sure what the audio gurus here feel about line level adapters, but this will let me convert to a non-Bose aftermarket based system later if I need/want to. Also, some don't like the sound quality of the Blaupunkt systems, but I like the keycard security, and although they've screwed up the color schemes on their new models, it still looks like the most conservative of the aftermarket units (Becker aside).

I have not seen a posting yet about how to replace the Delta with a later head unit.
