radio skips out ... stereo bugs ...

On my 89 100q with the stock stereo system, sometimes within the first 15-30 minutes in the car, or if it is cold, when I'm driving along, the radio jump to the AM band when it was on FM, or it will just go dead altogether. It can happen when going over bumps in the road too.
The only way to get it back to the correct band/station is to tap on the AM or FM button until it decides to come back to life. Sometimes I need to tap on it for a 10 seconds or so.
This is so odd that I haven't even the slightest idea of how to approach it, but I'm hoping some of you out there have experienced, and fixed, the problem.
