Default RNS-E or aftermarket??

(And Teddy....I know your answer...you are biased ...lol)

Was all set to go for the RNS-E, and then add components to it (amps, seperates & a sub.)

I spoke to a friend who has a car stereo install shop and told me the experience of one of his customers. He put the RNS-E in an RS-6, and put in the additions mentioned above. About 2 months later he was not happy with the sound quality, and went aftermarket head unit (DVD/NAV/MP3 etc.).

Thoughts?

Default

I have no problems with my sound quailty... but I'm not audiophile either and I never "crank it up".

Default The sound may be better but...

nothing beats the OEM look of the RNS-E. Several people confirmed that the RNS-E sounds better than the Symphony (I or II) head unit when properly coded and connected. It's not the highest end audio system but it is the best if combining OEM look and feel (and integration) and good sound quality.

It would be best if you could try it out before doing the upgrade. There are lots of A6 owners who have upgraded already, maybe one is near you.

Default I have heard them (not in an A6 though), but only with the factory BOSE setup...

...none of them changed their factory speakers or added any aftermarket amps.

Default Depends if you are an audiophile or not. Lots of other factors to weigh:

cost
complexity of install
oem integration
resale value of car
sound quality
functionaliy etc...etc.

Each person should weigh all of these items individually.

Keep in mind...you were talking to a high-end stereo shop...so he was looking at you and thinking...."Cha...ching"..."this will be a $4k order".

FYI - You can add the RNS-E and go with aftermarket amps, crossovers, speakers etc...and achieve a much better quality of sound. I know of two people that are doing this right now (factory fitted RNS-E's in a B7 S4)...with good success.

Do a search on the JL audio Cleansweep too. A popular device for this type of arrangement.

Good luck in your quest!

Default The interface is also an issue

How you interface to the RNS-E is also critical for SQ.

Some interface methods cause impedance problems and create response tilts, some ruin the noise floor.

We did an upgrade in a 2006 A3 with OEM RNS-E and we didn't feel the SQ was bad. I liked it enough to plan on putting one in my allroad.

http://kward1.homestead.com/2006a3.html</a
