S4 sound, will just an amp and 12" be enough
If i keep the stock bose speakers and just get a 12" and an amp to run it, will this provide fairly decent sound, or should i upgrade the speakers as well?
The car audio guy told me amps are specialized, so if i just want a 12" now, i would have to get another amp later on if i want to run better front and rear speakers. Is he full of sh*t?
I dont need head thumping volumes, just a clean crisp sound.
Any suggestions on an amp and 12" to get?

He is partially correct.
If you're only going to add a sub now, you're probably only going to buy a mono or 2-channel amp to run the sub. That doesn't leave you with a possibility of hooking up new front and rear speakers to the amp.
You could buy a 4 or 5 channel amp and just use 1 or 2 of the channels to run the sub now and leave the remaining there for future use. This doesn't make any sense to me though since a new set of front and rear speakers would not be a huge cost to add once you already bought the amp so you might as well just go all the way.
My advice would be if you're happy with the sound now but just want more bass, just get the sub. If you want an overall improvement, just do it all at once.

I agree with HIS4. However, I would replace those front speakers along with
the addition of the amp and sub.
Leave the stock rears, they're only there for fill or remove them altogether if you rarely have rear seat passengers. You should also consider a single 10" sub or two instead of a single 12". Again, it's personal preference.
Visit a couple of good local audio stores and audition some gear. Personally, I like the Alpine 4 channel amps and subs (Type-R or -X). The front components come down to personal preference, some 5.25" component speaker brands worth auditioning include: Dynaudio, Focal, DLS, Hertz, Diamond Audio, Infinity and Boston.
Budget will need to be between $1,000 to $3,000 for quality components: an amp, sub/s, front components speakers, MDF front speaker adapters, Blaupunkt adapter for RCA outs from stock h/u and a 4 guage amp wiring kit.

I did the sub only upgrade and I felt I didn't need new door speakers, boy was I wrong...
I just upgraded my doors with JL Audio components, I can't believe I had stock for over 3 year, what a difference. I just orderd Audiobahn Mid bass speakers for the rear doors. I'm leaving the rear door tweeters stock.

Nooooo! Friends don't let friends buy Audiobahn.
You should just leave the rear stock if you're going to leave the tweeter stock. I would probably fade them so you can't hear them from the front so you don't pull your front stage to the back of the car.

i missed your post, see my next one above
I wish i saw this before. Please answer why you feel one 10" is better than a 12"
Good to hear i got a decent sub (alpine type R - and amp, but the bass is way to overwhelming for me.
I listen to trance, hip hop, and house - bass driven music, so this is disturbing. When i turn it up to hear the mids and highs better, the bass shakes my clothes - literally.
