I prefer sealed, think it sounds tighter, but requires more space....

Default sealed tighter, vented louder

Frankly in a car there isn't much choice. You can't really afford the inefficiency that goes with a sealed box.

Go the vented route and learn to love flabby bass.

Default sealed will yield better sound quality, and you can still get ear-splitting loud.

a lot of people say vented boxes are louder... well, that's kinda half true.... a vented box will be considerably louder at the frequency in which the box is tuned... but the quality of the bass is loose, not tight, and muddy. Although I have seen some advanced designs of vented boxes that yield tight bass, those boxes are usually much more complicated to build, and definately not for the novice box builder.

A sealed box will get plenty loud and it doesn't have to be that large. I have a single 12" in a 1.25cu/ft enclosure (it's not that big... really) and it is loud as f*ck! And the bass is tight and controlled. A good 10" sub will work in as small as a .5cu/ft enclosure (that is really small) and it will also be very loud. I made mine a little larger to accomodate extreme lower frequency extensions without stressing too much on my amp which is not real high powered to begin with.
