So I have Bose in my '01 A6 and I'm not impressed with it...

Is it possible/makes any sense to look for replacement speakers (and are there any recommended brands/models), or a complete replacement (HU, amps, speakers, sub, wiring) is needed to really improve the sound?
I did some STFA and didn't see any success stories for just speaker replacements.

Best bet would be to install a proper sub, even a small one will provide significant bass & free up the cabin speakers so they don't have to handle any bass, which provides a much sharper sound.
I've done this many times on the A3/S3 with Bose using a custom stealth enclosure and a 6.5" JL Audio sub. The transformation is dramatic without having to go the whole aftermarket route.
