Default So i want good tight bass, but don't want a 100lb sub box in my trunk...

Here is what ive thought up so far...

Alpine CDA 7995 (unpowered, MP3)
MBQ 5.25 front speakers
OEM for rear fill, perhaps entry level MBs?
PPI A400 Designer Art Series as system amp. This is from my old system in my truck.

For the sub...perhaps 1 JL 10W7 with a JL 500.5 amp powering it in a sealed 3/4 MDF box? My old truck had a JL 10W1 and i loved it, great sound, in a sealed box. Back then the PPI was powering 2 sets of MB quarts AND the sub and there was plenty of power for everything.

So...do i really need a sub amp? I could have the PPI power the fronts and the sub...but i think it would be cleaner for a dedicated sub/sub amp, and then the PPI powering the fronts (seems a waste for them to power just the fronts, unless i add some rear fill)

Anywho...thoughts? I don't want to get too much bass...because i know ill abuse it So a single 10 or perhaps 12...and like i said, i don't want 100lb of sub-box if possible. Does JL even make their W1 series anymore, or are they not worthy of consideration?

My budget is 2k, and i have, as i mentioned, the PPI A400 already.

Cheers,
Sameer

W7s are very power hungry. If you're going to run a 5 channel get a 10W6 instead. Better match.

Default 500.5 is a 5-channel. Do you mean 500.1?

Well, if you don't want a 100 lb sub then the W7 and W6 is out because those probably weigh 15-20 lbs by themselves. I would say W1, which is still available, or maybe another brand like Image Dynamics or Audiomobile.

Default Does the sub have to be JL? There are other brands that play just as a good or better.

Adire Audio, Xtant, Image Dynamics, MB Quart, B.A. If you're not trying to set SPL records :-p, look into MB Quart PWD (Premium series) subs. They are very clean, accurate and require small amounts of space. Best thing about it is right now MB Quart is having some sort of mark down on them (just the 10" from what i heard), so you can get them for 200 or less a sub. People sleep on the Quart subs, but they play extrememly well. If I didn't have the equipment in my car i currently have, I would probably go with 3 of the Premium 10s. You could probably go with 2 Premium 10s in a 1.2 cu.ft. enclosure and keep your weight requirement as well as give you good low frequency extention and fast response. Also, they are not very power hungry subs so you don't need **** load power to run them good.

Good to see another Art Series PPI out there. I have a couple of A300s in one my cars....favorite amps still to this day.

Anyways, good luck.

Default I'd suggest NOT a W7, you don't need it.

W3v2 if you want JL. And yes, you could run it off that ONE amp. The Art Series amps are indestructable and that amp has plenty of power for a single 10" W3v2, and it will be tight and loud, and less weight.

Default I'd pull the rear altogether and let the bass vent into the cabin through the holes.

Using stock rear fill sounds like ***, trust me I've done it.

I've got a Boston Pro 12" I'll sell you cheap if you want it Sameer.

Default Ya im leaning that way...entry level MB Quarts are only like 115 a pair though...

so how hard is it to install an aftermarket HU?

Second, where do you put the crossovers for the speakers you install?

I kinda want to do the Audi system myself, i did the Miatas, but im hesitant to damage the car, and the Miata was the first time id ever put in a stereo, it was damn fun. I ended up cramming the crossovers into the speaker baffles (droptop, so water resistance was more important for me)...

Tell me about this Boston sub, any good? Boston has a good rep.

Cheers,
Sameer

Look into image Dynamics IDQ line of subs. They aren't that heavy, don't need tons of power to get them moving and work in ridiculously small boxes. Go to www.sounddomain.com and check them out.
