With some fine tuning, just a aftermarket HU and 4 speakers can sound pretty good.

I've taken my old system out and sold it in preparation for selling the car but I couldn't put the Symphony back in because I didn't have the rear speaker amp. So I put in my old Pioneer HU and hooked it up to the MB Quart Q series in the front and a set of MB Quart coaxials in the rear deck. Everything is running off the HU. At first it sounded horrible but after fooling around with the EQ (luckily my HU has a fully adjustable 13-band EQ) it actually sounds pretty good. The only thing missing is the low bass but you can't expect that without a subwoofer. Comparing it to other factory stereo systems, I think it sounds way better than any factory system.
