Sound deadening the doors
Hi All,
I'm looking at starting an overall sound deadening / SQ improvement project on my B5 S4 and I'm curious what other people have done with the doors. Our doors are fairly unique (I believe) in that the inner skina are almost entirely open and don't have moisture seals. It's my understanding that for best results, one should (generically): use butyl/foil on outer skin, glue on a closed cell foam, and then butyl/foil again on the inner skin of the door to, in effect, make a sealed box for the speaker. It seems this last layer of foil is not possible to do with our cars...am I wrong in that assumption? What have others done?
TIA,

Apply to the outer skin and the door panel.
Damping the door panel made a big difference in midbass output in my car. I used a butyl material and close cell foam on both the outer skin and the door panel.
BTW - We do have moisture barriers. It attached to the door panel not the door itself.

Cool. Thank you very much. Just to make sure I understand you 100%...
..you applied a total of 2 layers of butyl and 2 layers of foam per door, correct?
Also - I'm guessing you removed the speaker from the door panel prior to doing this?
Thanks again,

I applied in this order.
1 layer of butyl to the outer skin then covered that with 1 layer of foam. Then I put 1 layer of butyl on the back side of the door panel and then covered that with 1 layer of foam. I also did the underside of the rear deck and the trunk lid.
For the door panels, I did take the speaker off. I didn't apply material to the whole door panel. Just the bottom half because I wanted to dampen resonances from the midrange speaker.
