Sound suddenly get very loud

Hi! I have just bought an A6 1.8T 1997 which has no manuals!!! Could anyone tell me if there is a reason why when i turn the volume down on my stereo it goes really loud and I have to turn it down again. Also, anyone know where I could get a manual online??

Did you check in the little slot underneath the steering wheel for the manual?

This is a common problem with Audi head units, the volume gets a mind of its own

It's actually a design flaw, but Audi won't admit it. All the settings for the controls on the HU are stored in a memory chip, so the HU knows how you left the volume, bass, treble etc when you left the car. Even if you disconnect the battery the HU remembers eveything, even station presets. Sounds great but the chip eventually runs out of space and because the volume is the most constantly adjusted setting this is the first to be affected.
There is a fix, but it's not cheap, far better to either get the unit replaced under warranty or buy a replacement on ebay.
