Default Started on my door pods last night....

My plan is to make a duplicate of the lower front part of the door out of fiberglass, then mount the new speaker ring to it at a slight upward angle, then enclose the whole thing in fiberglass/ grillcloth. Finally I'll wrap it in vinyl and mount it right to the surface of the door. After it's mounted permanently in place, I can then cut the hole thru the original door panel to allow the back of the magnet to poke through. When it's all done, it'll stick out a little, but not enough for it to interfere with the glove box door.

The speaker grilles will be made out of metal grill mesh. I might or might not wrap them in grill grey grill cloth... we'll see. I'm not sure how I'm going to mount them though. I'm leaning toward just an interference fit but I don't want them to keep flying out when I close the door.... so that's sort of up in the air right now.

Anyway, so far last night I made my fiberglass molds that match the contour of the door perfectly. We'll call them "backplates" Tonite I'll start cutting the speaker mounting rings and positioning them on the fiberglass "backplates".
(just picture me sitting there looking like Dr. Evil making the finger quotations gesture as I say "backplates") he he..... that's funny.

One thing I learned.... fiberglass smells! I stunk up the basement really bad. Had to run fans and keep windows open all nite. Note to self.... next time do this in the GARAGE!

I'm taking pictures along the way so hopefully at some point I'll be able to post them. Disclaimer... it's a disposeable camera so don't expect great pics!

I'll keep posting progress reports as I move further along.

Default Here's a tip...

Go buy a set of MB Quart Flush Mount Speaker Grilles for 6.5" Q-series speakers. This is what is used in my car (and the pods are perfect). It'll make it a lot easier to mount you speakers and make everything look slick (and make your car look even more like mine... bastard!!)

Default I'm at a cross road......

I was actually thinking of using the Diamond grill that came with the speakers. I'm debating between making my own from scratch or using the Diamond. Either way will work, it's just two different ways of skinning the cat. I won't use the speaker mount ring though, it'll make the speaker stick out too far and thus interfere with the glove box door. So I'll be making my own ring from hardboard.
