Stereo revision 23980...sub & amp question

Some people told me to ditch the JBL 1200.1 amp and go for a smaller amp and a bigger box, specifically this amp

would that work?? is there anyway to tune down the power of an amp, so I could just buy the JBL one and later on down the road if i wanted a more powerful sub use that??
