Subwoofer mounting, in the box, or out of the box?

I'm building boxes for my 8.5LF's tonight and I've come across a question I haven't found an answer to, should my sub be in the box like this illustration in the PDF shows?

The only downside I could see to this would be sealing the "lid" vs ease of subwoofer access.
Or should it be mounted outside of the box like this:

The only downside I could see to this install would be the additional volume of air in the box, and the reduced protection of the subwoofer.
Which mounting should I use? I'm tempted to use the inside mount with a weak sealant since they only speced inside box dimensions. The only way I could see that they could accurately calculate the 0.3cuft volume with a 9x9x6.5 interior would be with the inside mount. And the picture shows it that way

mounting them means you need to open the box to get at them. Not fun, esp if the box is done right and it's sealed or glued etc.
