I am just about to put this system in my 2003 A4 1.8T Avant. All of the electronics are McIntosh, the speakers are Dynaudio, the subs are Alumapro. Check out the link below for my system diagram. Tell me what you think before I go ahead.
Here is the list of components going into the install:
McIntosh MX406 CD Source Unit
McIntosh MPM4000 In-Dash Meter Module
McIntosh MCC404 (4x100@4Ohm) Speaker Amp
McIntosh MCC302 (1x600@4Ohm) Subwoofer Amp
McIntosh R1163 Sub Amp Gain
Dynaudio 240GT Fronts & Rears (x4)
Alumapro Alchemy 12 MX Subwoofers (x2)
Stinger Wiring & Installation Accesories
Optima Deep Cycle Battery

Most of the components (save for the the speakers and the meter module) are coming from my previous vehicle so my only immediate expense will be the install.
I am taking it to a local high quality installer who installs on Audis, Porsches, and BMWs regularly. They are planning on altering the spare wheel well to serve as an amp rack are going to be making cutsom MDF & fiberglass cargo corner panels fabricated to house the sealed subwoofer enclosures, speaker cross overs, and the EQ.
The speakers are going into the factory location without any need for alterations and the source and meter module will be going stacked into the factory stereo location in a custom made adapter. Both of the corner panels and the amp rack are to be smoothed and painted high gloss to match the exterior of the car.
The installer charges around $75.00 per hour which includes all installation materials such as dynamat, wiring, etc. They are estimating an install period of 20 hours.
My approach to the system is to keep the car functional. The cargo area will still be useable and will nearly resemble the stock cargo when the amp rack is concealed with a removable carpeted cover. I am definitely going to try to compete with the final product over the summer.

i reckon for front stage is 200watts (at least) per channel. better go with two 2x200watts amps (i think mcintosh has them). Dyn's need big watts...trust me
as for the subs, it would be much much better if you can find Velodyne subs (the one with active servo). forgot the model#. its much much better than the alumapro

My previous installer (Clay Watson @ Kustom Kar Audio in Boulder, CO) really turned me on to Alumapro. I eventually had the 2 Alumapro 12s running in my last car with an MCC404 set to 2x400 @ 4Ohms and they sounded great, they are very efficient and tight while still being able to displace a lot of air.
I would like to push more power into the speakers, however, McIntosh amps are very large and I have space limitations (I would need to have 3 amps instead of 2). Previously I had a pair of Dynaudio 240MKIIs as fronts pushed by an MCC404 set to 4x100 @ 4Ohms and they performed well.
Two things that I wouldn't mind doing would be to have the Denon DCT-Z1 as the source and two Orion DEQ-30 1/3 octave EQs. It would definitely be nice to have 30 bands of EQ instead of 7 bands that the McIntosh EQ has. However they are even more lofty in price, I think the DCT-Z1 is $2800 dollars and the DEQ-30s would be $1300 a piece. Another possible upgrade would be to run some Dynaudio 3-ways up front but I really don't want to mess around with the interior too much (I will be getting rid of the car at some point). Also if I had silly money and could do it all over I would run a fully balanced ZAPCO system with some of their competition 1/3 octave EQs.
For some reason I have always liked installs that are brand coordinated, don't ask me why. I would have McIntosh Speakers & Subs installed but they aren't as well developed as their electronics and Dynaudio and Alumapro put them to shame.

why don't you use dyn's sub instead. so you can have a full dyn's and full macintosh's
well...actually the brand is not just then point, it's the installed that counts. if you using state-of-the-art items, but the installed can't unleash its ture ability, then it'll be a waste.
Zapco's huh?Symbilink.....good idea. but mcintosh all the way...
i would definately prefer 3-way front. you can put the 2"mid and 1"tweets inthe a-pillar, had it made knocked-down from resin. so, if you want to sell the car, just detach them. use 4x100 bridged into 2x400@4ohm to drive them.
