Default V1 or K40, i am going to buy one, any comments? I live in the NYC area

the K40 with front and back diffusers is gonna run me 1200, the V1 is cheaper, but a nice hidden install will cost me about the same. Which is better, more protection????

Default V1, but I have a question...(long)

How do you figure they are going to cost the same? I don't know the price of the K40, so I'll take your word for it...$1200. The V1 is $440 with a remote display, but $760 for intallation??? You must have the V1 up high on your windown, and many here have hardwired them to their car with the supplied equipment in less than 1 hour.

The only thing I can think of that would escalate the cost is trying to integrate the remote display into the dashboard somehow...but that should only run an addt'l $200 or so.

Okay, with that said, I have a V1 and I think it is outstanding. I've tried the other cheap junk, but I confess, I've never tried a K40. The nice thing about the K40 is the radar receivers are under the hood tucked away from plain sight. It's nice, but there is a performance penalty for this. I have tried moving my V1 to the bottom of the windshield, and I have noticed dramatically reduced warning times. Mid-way up the windshield to the top of the windshield are best.

Default well, the shop i went to

does very stealthy display work, they dismantle the actual unit and hide the thing(like in the rear view mirror) they do some interesting work, but i think u are right the price is VERY steep.

Default Hiding the display in the rearview mirror is really cool, but...

it's not very functional. The ideal position for the display would be in the instrument cluster (where most people are mounting their remote displays...right between the two *****), or somewhere near the base of the windshield. These are the two places you will be looking when you get a reading on the V1.

The other thing is that at night, you really don't want to advertise to the world that you have a radar detector...mounting it in the rearview mirror would do just that.

Again, my vote goes to the V1, and do the remote display your self in one hour.

Default V1

Drove a friend's 1994 Toyota Supra with built-in K40. Brought my own V1 and put it on the windshield. The K40 kept falsing in the city, and the V1 gave me an extra 200-400 ft warning on the highway; that's if the K40 went off at all. I wouldn't trust the K40 if I had installed it on a bicycle.

I'm thinking of doing my own "stealth" install of the V1. The best position for the V1 is actually just under the rearview mirror; the dilemma is that you want it as high up as possible for rear detection, but about midway up for front detection. The problem is that Audi has a heat/sun shield in the upper four or so inches of the windshield which will interfere with laser detection and might interfere with radar as well. Installing the V1 on the visor makes it less effective. If I ever get around to ripping the V1 apart, the front detector will go on the windshield, just under the shaded area, the rear detector either above the rear-view mirror or in the rear window. The display and audio will be hidden somewhere in the instrument cluster.

Default i also believe that taking the unit apart does something to mess up the VG-2 protection...

as the unit itself is sealed...

Default You're right...and it will also trip off other radar detectors in the area...

Most won't know it's you giving them the royal headache (unless they have a V1). Another one of my pet peeves...driving down the highway with another car...who happens to have a cheap, leaky radar detector! It's those times where I wish I had a small radar emitter to flash on and off a few times to get rid of them. Yeah, I know, I could slow down, but I don't wanna!
