Default Want to add sub/new speakers/amp while keeping.....

the existing head unit on a 2001 A4 1.8T. Is the head unit sufficient enough to drive the sub and amps and which brand should I get? I looked at MTX, Alpine, Lightning and Phoenix Gold? Which would you recommend and has anyone does this before??

Default You need the following:

2 line level adapters, prefereably AudioLink brand.

a pair of 6.5 inch speakers for the rear, Infinity Reference 652i works very well here.

A component system 4 inch mid, 1 inch tweeter and crossover for the front doors, Kicker Resolutions are excellent here.

A subwoofer and enclosure. Our Audi's are rather boomy on bass so get a good tight woofer like the aluma pro or SoloBaric. I have an 8" round solobaric in a .33 cubic foot box and it works extremely well, and I don't lose much trunk space.

Either a 4 channel amp and a sub amp, or a 5 channel amp. There isn't much room on the rear deck. My 2 amps barely fit there. Most any decent 4 channel amp 40 watts or more will be fine for the mains. For the sub, be sure to get a higher quality 2 channel amp, or a sub specific amp. Plan on having at LEAST 150 watts for the sub. They really suck down the juice.

You'll probably need an active crossover before the amps. These cost about $75.

An EQ in the trunk is nice too. Or you can use the "Hidden" eq in the head unit.

Default Heh, sorry, can't give any advice for up there. I'm in California!

Talk to the installer about what he's going to do. If he seems to be giving you a line, or not that technically sharp, run for the hills.

Default Don't A4's come with pre-amp outputs

I just installed an amp and kept my stock head unit on 98 A4 2.8. And did not need the line level adapters. I went straight from the radio to the amp rca connections

let me ask you a question then. Do we know why some people are buying and using the line level adapters if the radio does have pre-amp outputs??
and at such a cheap price?

I actually had mine made. ( I did not know the adapter was available).

Default Yes, but it uses a common ground and some systems don't like that.

You could still build a ground isolator.
