for the ultimate in SQ, there's nothing that even comes close to Alpine's 7990.
It is as close as one can get to high end home audio in a car. 24 bit digital filter w/ digital optical output virtually guarantees pure sound and clarity, plus a lot more technology than I care to remember.
sorry to burst your bubble, but Eclipse is nice - no doubt.

since you saved $1800. but we are not talking about $1200-$3000 HU's. the sony has a 20-bit burr brown, 4 less than the alpine (http://www.xplodsony.com/products/?CATEGORY=CD&MD=CDX-C90)? are you gonna tell me that 4bits matters that much in this range? the point is no flash and alpine doesn't understand that concept anymore except for a $3000 HU. sorry to burst your bubble but for $3000, it is not worth it, especially when a $1200 unit can keep up. also note the handy optical digital outs on the alpine, FOR WHAT? the only thing you can run it to is the digital 5.1 surround processor, but it still changes the signal to analog to run to the amps. NONE of their amps have a digital input. heck even the $500 panasonic has better oversampling at 32x compared to 8x. and is there STILL no tone bypass on the alpine's? (not sure, but the specs don't mention it)

the CD45z and an MB75 and both jammed within 6 months of install.
Getting a refund out of Nak was not a pretty picture either. :-/ I posted about my problems and a fellow AW're decided to try it anyway. 3-4 months later he posted that both the head unit and the changer he bought had broken.
It's a shame, cause the units sound absolutely stellar - nice and warm and musical, but the mechanisms are made from cheap plastic parts. :-(

real nice! and i agree re the price and quality differential, $3K is a lot, but hell, I did not pay that much.
anyways, your right about the optical digital outputs, but the whole point is to get the F1 processor as well. by the sounds of things, you're probably aware or familiar enough with the preformance of both the processor and the 7990, which is the F1 system, that using both will be far and away the purest sound.
can't argue with the quality one gets with that sony unit, but hey, i have the F1 so i gotta represent.

would pay retail for anything, never mind car audio.
I have it, but I didn't pay retail or even wholesale. Sh@t, if one paid retail for high end audio, the cost would be close to what the car is worth!
nevertheless, you get what you pay for - most of the time. there's no doubt the unit cost too much, but the quality and performance speaks for itself!
