What is the difference between a single 10" sub and a single 12" sub?

I currently have a 12" Kicker in a non-ported enclosure in the back of my Avant(not mounted to anything for easy removal when needed). Also have a Sony HU and Sony Amp.
The sound is good but a little "muddy" as I like to describe the bass sometimes.
I was wondering if a 10" sub would hit cleaner. Looking for more precise bass.
Thanks for any input.

1) I'm unfamiliar with Kicker subs, which model?
2) What's the internal volume of the box? Was it a prefab or designed specifically for kicker subs?
3) How is the box positioned? Have you tried pointing it in other directions?
4) How are you getting a signal to the sub amp? RCA's from the headunit, tapping a speaker connection, etc?

You could be filtering out the lower midbass frequencies which would give a perception of what you describe. Common crossover settings are somewhere between 80 and 120 Hz.

but it depends largely on which 10...for example, my IDQ10 is much cleaner than my old MTX RT10's, even though both subs are 10". so if you're looking for a new sub and want something cleaner, i'd suggest looking into Image Dynamics or JL or a similar brand for a sub from them and then get whatever fits your budget

a 12" sub in the right box will sound cleaner and tighter than a 10" sub in the wrong box. with that said, a 12" sub in the right box will NOT be tighter than a 10" sub in the right box using the same recommended amount of power and xovers.
the difference is that a smaller sub will play higher bass frequencies easier, while a bigger sub extend lower. however, in the right enclosure and a standard frequency cutoffs, there is no reason for a 15" sub to sound muddier than an 8" of the same brand/model line for 95% of music.
bigger = more cone area = louder
in my experience most people with "muddy bass" have bad installs, meaning the boxes the sub is in is WAY TOO SMALL.
what sub do you have and how big is your box after displacement
