Where should I put my sub, and what are some good speakers to upgrade fronts while keeping stock HU?

Hey guys, I have a 2000 S4 with the non-bose system, so it just has the separates in the front door and the deck speakers in the rear. Even with the hidden equalizer it lacks bass, so I'm going to get an 8" installed in the back.
First question, the installer said it will be the same price to relocate my phatox to hang upside down on the deck, and make a custom wood box to fit in the right side area in the trunk, as having a normal box made that would sit in the trunk. What are your opinions, any reason not do this? I'd almost prefer a simple box in trunk attached with velcro, that I could unplug and remove when I needed the space, just because it seems less intrusive.
Second, I know once I fix the low end the high end will be crappy in front (no stage). Can you guys recommend good replacement speakers for the front, powered from the non-Bose HU? I realize getting an amp and new head unit is the way to go, but I don't want to spend that dough on audio.
Thanks!

Mine is a 12", so your 8" would be an easy fit, and they may not even have to relocate your Bose amp (which hides back there somewhere) like they did mine (I just had mine removed, because I'm not using any of the Bose system anymore, and I needed the space).
In a B5 trunk, there's not much room if you start hanging things from the rear deck, so I would recommend going with an enclosure in the right or left side cavity. You won't want to fuss with removing/replacing your velcro'd box, and that's just easier to steal anyway. Plus, what if you want to take a long trip and need the trunk? No low end that way, and trust me - you'll get used to the improved sound.

Although, I didn't want lots of boom anyway, so my setup actually was only a compromise to my pocketbook! I was going for SQ only with this setup, and I achieved it to my satisfaction.
If you want tons of bass, it's going to be very difficult to get it from something like what I have. However, I should note that Boston Pro subs can handle over 1000 watts of power (in the 12" size), so if I used a larger amp, I could probably get more volume. But that's certainly going to pale in comparison to big-volume enclosures and long-stroke subs.

See my last sentence from my previous post:

I didn't speak about 1 vs. 2 subs, but you're right - I think the old rule is that adding another sub (at equal power) will yield a 3db increase. I wasn't trying to compare mine to yours, but I was just trying to point out that you can get a good amount of volume from a single small enclosure sub if you have to.
