Default Will the ConcertII CD headunit fit as a direct replacement for my Concert cassette unit?

Same size? Same connectors?

And will it control a CD changer/DICE unit?

I'll probably keep my DICE unit, and if it will fit, I may get a Concert II to replace my defunct Concert unit.

THanks!

Default Concert II is CAN based, Concert I isn't

So it's not a direct replacement. You could go with a CAN Adapter but you will loose the radio display in the cluster.

Default I don't have a radio display in my gauge cluster.

What does CAN based mean? Canadian model? Or some other mysterious code?

So will the harness behind the radio need to be modified?

Thanks again!

Default Some more details

The Concert II needs certain signals over CAN (Controller Area Network) and does no longer have pins for light, ignition and speed. If you you are going to install a Concert II in a non-CAN car (like most pre-2001 Audi), the radio won't turn on with ignition, it won't illuminate if you turn on the lights and GALA doesn't work either. If you have the DIS (center LCD in cluster), the radio station won't show up there either.

There is an expensive ($150 +/- change) adapter that translates discrete signals into CAN messages required by the Concert II but it won't support the DIS.

Due to the new CAN wires, some pins are different and re-wiring may be necessary (unless the CAN adapter does that for you).

And the size depends on what model of a Concert II head unit exactly you are getting. Since you have a pre-facelift B5, maybe the TT Concert II fits. But in general is the faceplate model specific and won't fit any other car.

Default What do you mean it won't turn on with ignition?

And where can one get the CAN adapter? Is there a FAQ or tech writeup for it?

Thanks again!

Default Search for CAN adapter here on the forum

There are at least a couple of post about this topic.

Your radio turns on when you turn on the ignition, correct? And it turns off when you turn off the ignition. And when you turn on the light, the radio lights up as well. All these is done via CAN on the Concert II.
