Default Wiring a 97 Bose system to an aftermarket head unit

Crossposted from the B5 A4 forum...

I know, this has been talked about before. Most of the discussion seems to be about the problems with the Bose amplifier. If I understand it correctly, non-Bose systems use an independent amplifier for the rear, while the Bose system has an amplifier for all six channels.

I have been searching for the past hour and found one post that makes some degree of sense. The tech article on replacing the Delta head unit as part of the Bose system isn't particularly clear, and mentions using the blue wire on the Scosche harness - something the Scosche packaging screams not to do on a 96+ Audi.

So, I'm kind of unsure what to do. The one post that made some amount of sense involved using pre-out outputs from the head unit. My Panasonic has four preouts (Front Left etc), so it should be relatively simple to buy four short RCA cables, plug them into the pre-out RCA plugs, cut the other end, and wire to the appropriate F/L etc wires on the Scosche VW01 harness. That should allow the Bose amplifier to do its job, plus the Panasonic head unit wants 4-8 ohm speakers and Bose uses 2 ohm speakers.

As far as I can make sense of the tech article linked below, this is what the original Delta head does in Bose mode - unamplified output. Therefore, using the unamplified output from the new head unit should do the same thing. I think I've got the right idea, but I'd appreciate some sort of confirmation.

Oh, and one other thing. What gauge wire do you guys recommend using? The max output of the stereo is 60 watts x 4 channels, which would seem to indicate 16 or maybe 14 gauge.

And a pic of the HU - Panasonic CQ-H2083U. Real pics to come when I've got it up and running... time to resume dremeling the DIN adapter plate.
