Default To apply paint sealant on a brand new car or not to?

I'd not heard of paint sealants until recently when a friend of mine got it done on his new car based on the recommendations of his usual detailer, as it's supposed to last 6 months plus he said.

Do you guys

1 - recommend putting on a paint sealant, and

2 - as a rough idea, how much might one expect to pay for a top quality paint sealant application by a detailer on a brand new car?

Thanks for the help!

Default LOL... i don't know why people just speculate if they have nothing to add...

yes, i do know what he paid, but I was

A - first of all, looking for an opinion on whether to get it done or not from someone who knows about it, and
B - asking what is a reasonable price to pay for it so I have a comparison and can decide if what he paid is too much or not.

Hence, my post!

Default Dealers charge around $300-400? I believe most of what they use are types of sealants.

If you are willing to invest some time, you'll be able to do a great (if not better) job on your own.

The benefit of getting some of the products through a dealership is the warranty aspect (read the fine print)

Default major skip...you can buy your own and do a better job.

gotta laugh.

my buddy's dad switched to Audi from Cadillacs. his dealer always sold him the "protection package." (BTW, this package needed to be touched up time to time by the dealer, LOL).

the guy always takes his cars to car washes....he's going to find out very quickly the diff. between Audi's paint and GMs, especially with a black car.

Default personaly it's a DIY job (PC7424 + Menzerna products)

<center><img src="http://rpaquet.com/S4Avant.JPG"></center><p>1. Menzerna Intensive Polish ($18)
2. Menzerna Final Polish II ($19)
3. Menzerna FMJ full molecular jacket (sealant) ($35)

FMJ is a synthetic (man-made) wax, apparently it will last ~6 months, but I will reapply every 2-3 months. Compare with a Carnauba wax which last ~1 month.

Default Thanks to those who replied!

My car's less than a week old, so there shouldn't be any need for polishing and clay barring I would think, which would make the prep work part before applying sealant fairly straight forward.

Interestingly, I tried to get some idea of pricing, so I called a local detaling shop in town that has a good reputation. They said they use a Dupont sealer with some sort of 5 year warranty (not meaning though that it will actually last 5 years they said - but apparently the sealant comes with a warranty that protects you against certain things like bird dropping etchings in paint for those 5 years) and on a new car it would cost $350.

The personal detailer my friend used said he uses some really high end stuff imported from Europe and he quoted me $300, as the product he's using is very expensive he said. He didn't say it would last many years, but that a year I should expect. I've heard of some ridiculously expensive waxes (like $2,000 a jar or something), so I thought maybe it makes sense, but from what I've read here, it doesn't sound like it.

I'm going to have a chat with them before going ahead, given these prices.

Default I would double check about not needing polish. I've seen dealer preps delivered complete

with swirls.
