Best way to clean engine bay

I vacummed up some fine sand from under my top engine cover (spark plugs, injectors) this weekend just because I was there for another job.
People like to talk about how complicated the electronics are, etc. Sorry to say my car car sits and drives in the rain, snow and high humidity all the time. The electronics are designed to survive high humidity, wet environments. My car is not a home computer. I would not hose down my home computer. Assumming you have an Audi it can take a little water on the engine.
Just hose it down, don't be too crazy, don't crap your pants in the rare case it needs to dry out for a bit.

It's really nasty stuff that you should NOT let run off into your lawn/drain. There are a TON of products out there that are MUCH friendlier to the environment. www.properautocare.com lists a bunch.
If you get your drinking water from a well, just remember that anything you wash off your car is going to percolate through the soil. Care for a jigger of benzyne and naptha?

Use some common sense. Electricity and water don't mix, so wipe down the battery, and try not to flood it with water. Same for the alternator. The rest of the electronics are reasonable well sealed...enough to withstand a quick rinse.

after the engine has had time to cool. Then I back it into the driveway and give the engine bay a good Simple Green bath. Let that sit for 10 minutes or so then start the car up. As it is running I hose the engine bay off just enough to get any dirt or cleaner out and then take it for a spin to dry it out completely.
Been using this method for years and never had a problem.
