it turns it stringy and it starts to fall apart. If you pat the clay dry before it gets folded, it seems to help keep it together.
As clay is getting close to $40 for 200g, I do everything I can to not ruin it.

Speed Shine, Great stuff. I would have never believed how clay works until I tried it myself six months ago. Now I'm a believer.
Does anyone here believe in using Groit's random orbital to clay? I've tried it and it works ok. But, after claying, the buffing of both polish and wax is not that great.Their buffing bonnets only get off 80-90% so I still have to hand buff anyway. Applying polish and liquid wax is better with the machine.
Then again, I prefer Groits carnauba paste wax over their Best of Show liquid.

I have an 01.5 nogaro blue S4 and its incredibly scratch sensitive but has very hard clear coat. The current pads I use seem to marr the paint, at first I thought that I just wasnt working in the diminishing abrasives, but then later tested the same pad with my rotary and found that at the speed I was running on my DA the pad would marr the surface. Can you recommend a pad that will not do this? I will use it with 3M finess-it and more so with P21S GEPC.
The pads I have work well on other cars but I need something special for my own personal. Its quite frustrating.
