FWIW, I thought I'd post a reply to my own post as a followup. I did have the mask replaced and the new one looks good. The old one was from a different vendor and had had a number of problems (apparently the company would sometimes use a product that was designed for boats, not cars). McDonald AG was able to remove it, there was no damage to the paint and the new one looks good. There were a pair of dents that presumably would have been much bigger without the mask, but no damage to the paint.
