Excuse me for barging in like this, but...Can anyone recommend a reputable and reasonable place to have an engine steam cleaned? A mechanic told my friend that he couldn't work on her engine til she had it steam cleaned.
My friend lives in Gardena, CA, and doesn't want to travel more than 20-25 miles to have it done.
Any suggestions/recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

is the engine really that nasty that you need to do something this drastic? Can you use some Simple Green-type stuff and a damp rag, will that get it clean enough?
FWIW, most DIY operations have a bay designed for cleaning/degreasing engines. You can start with a few cans of Gunk, let it sit for a while, put Saran Wrap on the sensitive looking stuff, hit it with the wand.

NOT hot. Then spray with simple green and scrub the gunk off with a nylon brush. Spray the bay lightly while teh engine is still running and let the runnign engine dry the engine bay. this should do the trick without any fancy stuff. Remove the covers first and clean them separately if the car has any.
