new car finish
is it a good idea to apply a synthetic wax over a newly acquired car (after washing it of course)? or is it better to let the dealership's new-car detailing wear away somewhat? I'm scheduled to pick up my car (06 S4) on 11/26, and they told me that the dealership details the car before releasing it to me. Should I tell them to skip the detailing?

a brand new car is
totally ready for any wax/sealant you prefer. Knock yourself out. Some folks opt not to have the dealer "prep" the vehicle since generally speaking they are teh svck.
If you are a DIY'er and good with clay bar, polish and wax, go ahead and do it yourself right the first time. Or... have them do it and then plan on doing your own full detail within a month or so of delivery.
On a new car I would probably lean away from any polish/paint cleaner steps, but I WOULD at least clay and seal/wax.
congrats and enjoy.

Ask some questions
this "detailing" the dealership does, what exactly is involved? It might just be a lot droid dragging a scratchy washcloth over the car after peeling off the white plastic shipping protectant. Or they might actually have someone do a complete clay/polish/wax routine. There's no way to tell unless you ask. This seems to differ quite markedly in different parts of the country (different expectations).
