Default Odd question - removing swirl marks on a stainless steel ..

.. Bosch dishwasher. Cleaning lady decided to attack it with a scratch pad and the result is obvious.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/136428/swirls.1.jpg">

I looked around trying to find anything to polish out the swirls and there's basically nothing in terms of appliance care products. So I then looked at car-oriented products and the short list I have is Flitz, Menzerna and 3M products.

Does the idea make any sense to begin with ?

If it does, I am really at loss as to what exactly to try and use.

Flitz stuff is more or less simple, not much to choose from. There's 3M Ultrafine (Perfect-t Swirl Remover), but looking at posts in this forum Menzerna is recommended over 3M. However latter has rather long list of products and I'm not sure which one's right for my purpose.

Any comments or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Default Looks like you need to "add" scratches

For watches they use scratch brushes to renew the brushed surfaces on cases. I think you probably want to do something similar on stainless.

I would try a ski tuning brush, they are about 4x6 and come in nylon, brass, copper or steel.

If I were trying to reproduce the brushed finish on stainless I would use a straight edge to guide the polishing pad or brush.<ul><li><a href="http://www.reliableracing.com/detail.cfm?edp=10920601&amp;category=2700">Steel brush</a></li></ul>

Default I had a similar problem with a range hood. It was scratched....

wasn't able to get rid of it 100% but was was able to lessen the effect of the damage by using something abrasive to follow the 'lines' of the original 'brush' marks. (looks like horizontal with your Bosch)

that looks like more of a satin finish, I would suspect polishing it is not going to help things

Default 1. Grab cleaning lady by back of collar. 2. Vigorously apply head to

scratches in a linear motion until gone, lol.

Default The entire face / surface needs to be refinished or replaced. .....................

If you try to refinish just the area that needs attention, it will not match the other areas.
Most likely the stainess steel used to manufacture the dishwasher was ordered from the steel mill or distributor with a 4P or 3P finish.
Basically, the coil or sheets were run through a sander to apply the finish and may or may not have had a sealant applied to it by the manufacturer.

You have four options:

1. Call the manufacturer and see what they suggest to do.
2. Contact the vendor that you bought it from and get their input.
3. Call the manufacturer and order a replacement door.
4. Remove the entire door and have it refinished.

Default Thanks. A replacment door panel costs around $300, which is probably close to the refinishing cost.

I also talked to the appliance guys - both sales and service - and they didn't even think before telling me to replace it.

I was just hoping for some quick-n-dirty polishing trick ... though if I am going to replace the panel, it won't hurt to run a couple of experiments on it after all

Yup, it is horizontal. But I'm not brave enough to add to the damage
