I absolutely love the look and ease of putting on a carnauba wax, but I know it doesn't last as long as a synthetic wax. Therefore, is it an OK practice to wax my car with a synthetic wax first, and then put a layer of carnauba wax over it?

It adds depth, brilliance and 'sheeting' effects. : )

prolong the life of the 4*, thus further protecting my car's paint and add even more of a shine then i'm all for it. Are you using 4*?

Works well, I'm still working on 3 coats from last November and the paint still looks deep and wet.
