Default Paint scratches

I got a little (ok a lot) carried away chipping the ice off my car during this last December snow. I have scratches on the paint as well as the plastic uprights between the windows on the side of the car.

Some of these I can feel only with a fingernail. Others I can feel with my rough thumb.

The scratches in the plastic can probably just be buffed out with some elbow grease, but can these other paint scratches be buffed out or will they need touch up paint?

Most likely you will need to post pics so we can see. Unfortunately, being able to "feel" a scratch is never a good thing, and may indicate the scratch is beyond polishing out. Generally, if the scratch is still the same color as the car, polishing will be enough. If the scratch is silver (ie no paint), then either touch up paint or a respray is required.

Good luck!

1 picture posted here, linked in the original post.

I may try what I have now and if that works great. If not it's off to a shop.

Those look bad, but it appears it is simply the plastic from the scraper rubbed onto the paint, as opposed to a scratch where paint is removed. you might be ok, i'd try some clay and then some polish, could come out nicely.

Default agreed (I don't see primer or metal)...

and generally speaking if your fingernail catches on it, it's a deep scratch that may or may not be fixable with a polish. If it's so deep that you feel it running your fingertip over it, you'll need a repaint.

Default Woohoooo Meguires Ultra Cut 105!

I used Meguiars Ultra Cut Compound 105 on the scratches I had. I was amazed that they all came out without any need for repaint. Now I need to add some wax again to protect the finish. I'll take another look at the car with fresh eyes today. I know I saw a small area on the rear that I missed Sunday. I'll check to see if there are any more that I can find today.

The 105 cmpound not only took out the scratches in the paint I used it on the plastic trim between the windows and it looks like new!

I only used a sponge applicater and a microfiber cloth to wipe it off. It took less than 45 minutes . . . so far
