Default question re: cleaning 1.8T engine bay

In cleaning out the engine bay I removed the plastic covers. The one that covers the power sterring fluid resevoir I recommend that you don't remove, as I have found it impossible to put to back on. I just can't get the clips to line back up with their respective holes. But the odd thing there was, that cover reveals a big empty spot inside this metal basket sort of thing. You could easily put a quart bottle of oil or something in there. Does anybody know what this is for? Maybe something goes there for some option I didnt get, but I can't think of what it might be. If you know how to get that damn cover back on I'd love to hear that too, although it doesn't appear to be a problem.

The other question is, when applying degreaser to the engine, do you do it with all the plastic covers off or do you leave them on? The cover for the air intake area on the left reveals some fragile looking stuff with little holes in it, and I am not too sure I want to spray water and degreaser all the place in there.

Default You would probably have better luck asking the A4 fourm how to get the cover back on, but as far as

the degreaser goes, I usually just remove the top covers (I have an S4 though, so things are likely different). I also don't use degreaser. I thought I would have to, but it turned out that a rag and 303 Aerospace and S100 Detail + Wax were all I needed. How dirty was your engine to start with?

Also, if stuff looks fragile, it probably is. I wouldn't drench it with water. That said, it is in your engine so it can't be that breakable, just be careful around it an cover it with a few plastic bags if you are really concerned.

Default Coilpacks on the 1.8T...keep water away from them!!

They are under the engine cover...so follow 2k2S4's advice, and clean up that area without the use of degreasers, tons of water, etc.

Default I ended up not using any degreaser or water at all

..not only was I unsure about how safe it was, turns out the engine wasn't that dirty after all. I just wiped it down with a soft rag. It's not ready for the concourse at Pebble Beach, but it looks a lot better now.
