Default Road trip time! Should I purchase a bra?? Need everyone's input...

So I have to drive from Norcal to San Diego in a month, and obviously I'd rather not get rock chips and bug guts all over the car. I don't mind purchasing a bra for the trip and taking it off when I get there, but I've heard they can leave swirl marks. Is that a bad idea for an 8 hour road trip? I'm arriving at a wedding so I don't want painters tape all over the thing.

Can anyone recommend a good cheap bra to use that won't leave any marks?

Thanks!

Any bra will rub the paint, especially if the inside of the bra, and/ or the car are not 100% clean. The only thing that will fully protect the paint is Stongard, Xpel, Clearbra (usually a 3M film) etc.

If you are only going to use it once (for your 8 hour road trip), the bra will probably not do any permanent harm. You will be able to polish out any marks the bra may create.

P.S. Never use a bra in the rain!

Default bras arw worse for the paint than the bugs. they flap

no m,atter how well the fit, and scar the paint, and mositure collects under them and clouds the clear coat.

Skip it

Tape with 3M painters tape on clean paint behind the bra, then use the bra.

Default i've got a Colgan bra ($90) that i've used for road trips, and i'm happy with it

it has a soft flannel lining on the inside that i honestly do not think harms the paint. The times i've used it (on 2-3 hr trips) the amount of crap that it collected on the outside was insane. i seriously doubt that all those bugs and rocks and debris are better for your paint than the flannel lining.

But i definitely agree i wouldn't leave it on permanently. Also, i use Klasse so the acrylic protection may be better, I don't know. But the paint does not show any signs of harm from it.

got mine from www.autoanything.com in case you're looking for it...

Default My Colgan is flap free

I wouldn't risk a cheap bra but a quality bra can be a good investment. I've used a Colgan bra on my A8 for the last three Minnesota winters. If you take the time to fit it right at the first install, there will be no issue with flapping. It's the movement of the bra that scratches the paint. The tight fit and heavy material of the Colgan keeps that from happening. Mine comes off for the spring and, once the car has had its spring cleaning, polish and wax, you can't tell where the bra was or wasn't.

The relatively short time that yours will be on should make the moisture trapping / paint discoloration (that's always gone after a month or two but can't be helping the paint) a non-issue.

Enjoy your trip...<ul><li><a href="http://www.autogeek.net/colcusbras.html">Colgan bra info at autogeek</a></li></ul>

Two major road trips using OEM bra. No problems to report. Clean after each trip.
