Default On a slightly different Keel

I have a question for you. (or 2) in a slightly different arena (Boat Gelcoat/Detailing).

I have a '95 18' Sea Ray Bowrider that is (was?) in excellent condition. This past weekend, I went camping with it(with high winds/waves), and ended up rubbing /scraping some of the gelcoat. Rubbing on the side, where a rope got caught overnight between the dock, bumper and gelcoat, causing some surface scratches in the gelcoat. The other place it took a beating, was on the hull centerline and a side of the bottom, where I beached it on a sand beach, but apparently the waves and sand (and maybe a rock) caused some slight scratches on the bottom (where the possible rock was, it's an area maybe 1'x2' that has these scratches. These scratches aren't deep, but are rough to the touch. I don't see any cracks anywhere.

I've been reading online about gelcoat paste and gelcoat repair kits. But I'm not sure if I need to do this for most of my work, I'm wondering if I can just buff it with a polishing compound with my 7424 RO buffer. There are a couple places from earlier bumps/bruises, where I might need the paste.

But, I was wondering if any of you have ever done anything like this, and if so, do you have any recommendations on how to tackle this? If you need some pics, I can take some, and post them this weekend (I hope - it's s'posed to rain all wknd, so perfect time for this).

Default My only experience has been on gelcoated fiberglass camper shells, and my jetski.

I attacked both just as I would any car. I used the PC and the full line of Menzerna products with outstanding results.

The one on the hull may be tough though... the jelcoat on the bottom of my jetski is SUPER friggin tough. All I really do there is keep a nice wax on it to help me go faster, can't say I've ever buffed it out.

Default would need to see it visually, but usually a good wetsanding and a buff

can cure the problem.

Default gelcoats are thick... so wetsanding isn't so bad on marine vessels

the hairy stuff is wetsanding some of our Ferrari dealer cars.... scary ****
