The word is the metal flake floats to the top of the bloob, then Langka takes off most of the metal, leaving the touchup a slightly different color. The best way to fix chips is with superfine grit sandpaper, if you have the guts- I don't.

Just looking for something a little finer. 2000 grit can leave deeper scratches in the clearcoat. Recently Meguiare's started introducing something they call "unigrit" which offers more uniform quality so you hopefully don't see any deeper scratches being introduced. I picked some up, which I'll probably use with the pencil and eraser, when I attempt some stone chip repairs, but I really would like to use something even finer than 2000 grit to level things out before compounding/polishing.
