trim, either staining or anything else. The only problem I've had with polish is getting too close to the matte finish roof on the allroad, leaving a slightly shiny spot.

Whether it was Z1, 3M IMG or IHG, Meguires #7 Glaze, or Menzerna IP or FP...all of which are applied with a PC (except IHG), I have never masked the car.
Even when using P21s MFPR, which isn't applied by machine, mainly for spot repair, I never mask. And this applies to the S4 (which has very little unfinished trim, it's all painted except for the black plastic at the windshield) and both A4's which have the unfinished trim around the grill, and windows.
And even if you used a product that left a residue on the black trim one swipe of ERV and the black will come right back.
I am not a chemist so I can't speak in technical terms, but I would speculate that the higher quality products, be them natural or synthetic, are friendly to more materials then the bargain store stuff... Maybe it's a way to get the consumer to buy more products...Mothers wax leaves a white residue on plastic trim. Remedy? Mothers Black what-ever it's called. It's a viscious cycle.
