what applicator do you use to apply stuff to the window trim and when do you do it

Using a terry towel to apply something like 303 to window trim means it's going to get on the windows and the paint at least in tiny amounts. Can rectify the window issue by cleaning them, but what about the car? Do you do the trim first, then was the car? Or just rehit that area of the car with some water? Or do you use a better applicator so you can make sure none of the stuff gets on paint/windows?

that work great for this. They are like a small sponge on the end of a short plastic stick. I think they were 12 for a buck. Great for applying liquids to small bits.

I can see doing that maybe every 2 or 3 months.. but not going through all that trouble every other week that's for sure.

Nothing fancy - just a cut up piece of old socks or t-shirt. Toss it when done. I usually clean the windows after I am done. Typically done every 2-3 months.
