Over 32f:
Wash at a local spray n wash as an alternative to having a hose, silicone blade to dry. Optimum No-Rinse might find it's way into my hands for the winter. Nine times out of ten I'll skimp on the drying because it's just gonna get mucked up again.
Under 32f:
I don't like to do it because I know it's just gonna freeze and expand in places it shouldn't, but if it's a must, I'll do it while the car is warm to keep it from freezing over.
Most important I think is that you get a good pre-season sealant and wax in before the first frost. This includes your wheels...it'll be easier to keep clean in the long run.

... you can see me washing in the winter here. This time around I'll probably use my 1 gallon pesticide sprayer to knock off sand and salt. I usually use it in the summer for rinsing off the wheels but in the winter I don't go nuts with my stock wheels.

at self service car wash for $1+
being in the NE snow belt, the car is going to stay gray all winter. there's no way around it.
maybe get a nice weekend of 50F+ to actually do a full hand wash and dry, but typically not.
