Default Wheel cleaner....

I usually just use soap and water, however I see alot of wheel cleaner products out there that claim to not harm your wheels, and was thinking of giving them a try. I know they clean the wheels - but are they really safe for your wheels? Can you guys recommend some good products and/or the ones that I should avoid?

Default P21S wheel cleaner is highly recommended here.

expensive? yes, but compared to new wheels, not bad at all.

Default The trick..

Most cleaners are acidic in nature..and that's not necesarily bad, that's how they clean. But it's best to wet wheels with water, spritz with cleaner..DO NOT let soak like the instructions say, instead, immediately help the cleaning by lightly agitating with a foam brush (better than bristles) and the rinse, rinse, rinse.

Other cleaners can be highly alkaline detergents. A few are ph balanced. But all can be used safely if used in the above method.

Just avoid the cheapo K-Mart brands that claim to clean without touching and allow you to hose off. Those are just TOO strong and acidic to be safe.

P21S is very good. Ph balanced and safe. The new Sonus is also Ph Balanced and safe. In fact, I found I can dilute these and still use them quite effectively.

http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?autopia+GjQk9r+tires---wheels.html

Default Excellent

Thanks for the info - just what I was looking for.

BTW I insanely jealous of your S4. Its a beaut! I wanted the S4, but like many others just couldn't justify/afford it cost-wise.

Default It's very good

so is Sonax, which is not always available. I'm sure most of the Meguiars cleaners are OK too.

As S4Bloom says, just leave the cleaner on the wheels briefly, it's not like you're trying to remove layers of rust on lawn furniture. Unless you ARE trying to remove a lot of wheel dust, then you should still work slowly and perhaps it will take 2 or 3 applications the first time. After that, a quick wetdown and rub will remove everything. One tip: wear a glove, I hate how the brake dust gets under my nails and won't come out.
