New product offering for a relatively undefined market segment. The mass marketability of this vehicle is questionable, but it is certainly a novel concept, and allows Audi to define it's own product within it's own sphere.
The lines are blurring everywhere else in the market, and the Germans have been relatively slow to adopt to playing in between established vehicle archetypes. The Americans have all sorts of funky SUV/pick-up/sportscar bastardchilds, as do the Japanese. People laughed when the RAV/CRV came out.
