I scanned an old magazine in my collection. How things have changed!

And yet the same - American poor quality gas guzzlers continue over 40 years later
Even the quote about after you buy foreign you can no longer go back to American. The Simca and the old Volvo 544 were my favourites, almost ugly enough to be cute....almost

Excellent post April! Lies...damned lies....and statistics!
"Imported car owners rate 53.4% of the dealers as excellent, while American car owners rate 54.7% of their dealers excellent"
- aside from the fact that the stat was probably that the car owners rated their dealers on a scale, so that it was more "rated dealers 'excellent' a certain percentage of the time", but really - a 1.3% margin with only 2000 car owners surveyed was considered a "win"?
Those old magazines are really a snapshot of the time - foreign cars were considered more of a joke than a competitor to the domestics. In some ways they were - two-stroke DKW's only had seven basic moving engine parts and had fuel mileage in the 30's mpg. Instead of dwelling on the supposed 1.3% margin of dealer service ratings, they really should have emphasized that first stat - that foreign cars on US roads had doubled in a short time.....hmmmm....
The other article was a perfect companion - the 1961 Plymouth Valiant is their "small car"???? Really? VVV
<img src="http://www.timemachinetoys.com/carads/ADV016.JPG">
....and in 1961 BMW was offering the Isetta 300:

Cheers!
