There was a reason the B5 led the brand renaissance in the late 90s - it was a combination of great value and great looks. The A4 has been on a steady decline since, IMO.

It was do or die for Audi back then. If the A4 didn't take off, Audi would have easily pulled out of the North American market. Blame 60 Minutes for that.
That of course was good for ones who did end up getting a B5. The price was lower than something from BMW when I did my shopping back then, and $40K for a nearly fully loaded A4 was pretty damn good. Audi was also selling the A8 at either at cost or at a loss for the same reason. The A4 was a hit.
Now that Audi is doing well, the prices have been adjusted to the point that it is fairly comparable to similar offerings from MB and BMW.
