Default B8 Avant fuel economy

I have had my new Avant for about 3 weeks now and am not very impressed with the fuel economy so far. I see it averaging about 20l/100km in city traffic which is a far cry from the 10l/100km that Audi claims. I am wondering if this is normal since the 5.5 liter V8 in the SLK gets better mileage...

Anyone with a B8 seeing the same issue? This is a standard 2.0T engine, vanilla stock car.

Default How are you calculating 20L/100km?

Tracking distance driven and how much I filled up, the worst I got was 14L/100km on my 06. What gas you using?

Default Too much idle time maybe in the tim hortins?

The first 5 tanks of gas are usually real bad as everything loosens up. Reset the meter after that and check agian. I'd expect 12L/100k if doing pure city driving then. I get 10L/100k if a spend a tank on nothing but city errands.

Hell I even got 21L/100k during 2 hours of Mosport at 80% of the time at wide open throttle.

Is it true that during break-in cars use lot more gas? (not that much, but it may account 4 some)?

Default Driving conservatively

The wife drives it 80% of the time and she is a conservative driver to put it mildly. I am taking it easy too given it has <1K on the meter.
Using 93 RON gas, looking at the trip computer for average gas usage. Short city trips, taking kid to school, groceries, the usual.
I am assuming the fact that it is brand new is accounting for some of this and we have mostly been doing really short trips with a cold engine.
Driving up to Whistler this weekend, curious how that turns out.

Default Recommendation, don't drive too conservatively

The engine needs a bit of stress for things to set in properly IMO.

The two A4s I had, I think the first 500km, after the engine is warmed up of course, I would use some full throttle but never exceed 3500-4000RPM. After that, I'd take it up to 5000RPM. At the 1000km mark, I would redline the engine once a day until the break in period is done. Plus engines nowadays have much better tolerance, not like in the past.

Having said that, I never had any problems with the engines in my current A4, the 01 A4 or 97 Accord I had. But then I never had no more than 80,000 on the first two cars as these were leased.

Some agree with this while some don't

Default In my experience at most 20%

But it takes a long time to really appreciate the improved mileage, I find. I noticed that all my 5+ yr-old cars have improved on their fuel economy with each year.

My A4 rarely got past 500km on a single tank when it was new, now I easily get 600km out of it on the same commute.
